Consumer Rights Bill

28 Jan 2014

We are pleased to report that the UK Government has introduced the Consumer Rights Bill into the UK Parliament.

Professor Hector MacQueen, the Scottish Law Commissioner with lead responsibility for consumer law, said: "We are delighted that the Consumer Rights Bill has been introduced into the UK Parliament. The Bill brings together key consumer rights in a way which strikes a balance between the interests of consumers and suppliers. In doing so, in the areas of remedies for faulty goods and unfair terms in consumer contracts, the Bill includes a number of recommendations which this Commission, together with the Law Commission for England and Wales, have made in recent years."

"To ensure consistency of consumer rights throughout the whole of the UK and the effectiveness and efficiency of their enforcement across the UK, we are pleased to endorse the way in which the provisions of the Bill are, wherever possible, expressed in a way which is jurisdiction neutral."

"We will continue to monitor the progress of this important Bill through Parliament."
